Even as he levels the gun at me,

places it firmly against my temple

and cocks it, I don’t believe I’ll die.

Quiet, I want to say, quiet:

I’m trying to think. But he’s not talking.

The metal is cool against my skin, the pressure

makes me think the gun is heavy—

With that jagged branch above us,

the air heavy, damp, just after a rain,

and a crowd gathering, drunk, a crowd

near enough, an electric cable crossing the sky

like a vein, someone hurling an obscenity,

someone just about to turn around—
